Getting Found When Google Answers the Question For You

AI answers now sit above the search results, and a lot of local businesses have watched their clicks fall off a cliff. Here's what still works in Edmonton.

The Click You Used to Get Is Gone

Search a question now and Google often answers it before you reach a single blue link. Ask an assistant instead and there are no links at all, just an answer and maybe a source or two.

For a business that spent years building content to rank, that stings. We have clients whose informational blog traffic dropped noticeably over the last year while their revenue held steady or grew. That gap is the whole story, and it tells you where to put your effort.

The Traffic You Lost Was Never Going to Call You

Somebody searching "how much does window tint cost" is doing research. They read the answer and move on. When Google absorbs that query, you lose a session in analytics and roughly nothing in revenue.

Somebody searching "window tint near me open Saturday" is holding a credit card. That search still produces a map pack, still produces clicks, and it still converts.

Sort your keywords into those two buckets before you panic. If what you lost was mostly bucket one, your problem is a reporting problem, not a business problem.

What Actually Feeds the AI Answer

Assistants and AI summaries pull from sources they can parse and trust. In practice, for a local business, that means:

Your Google Business Profile, kept current. Hours, services, service area, categories, and photos. This is still the single highest-leverage thing a local business owns, and it feeds the map pack, the knowledge panel, and the assistants.

Structured data on your site. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review schema tell a machine what your pages mean instead of making it guess. Every site we build ships with it.

Direct answers on your own pages. A question as a heading with a plain answer in the first two sentences underneath. Not three paragraphs of setup. If the answer is buried, it does not get quoted.

Reviews, and enough of them to be recent. Volume matters less than recency and specificity. Twenty reviews from this year beat two hundred from 2021.

Mentions on other sites. Local directories, chambers, suppliers, news, association listings. Consistent name, address, and phone across all of them.

Stop Writing Encyclopedia Posts

The blog post that explains a topic in general is the exact thing AI does for free now. Writing more of them is pouring water into a bucket with no bottom.

What machines cannot generate is anything only you know:

  • A job you did on 118 Avenue and what went wrong in the middle of it
  • What a permit actually costs in Edmonton this year
  • Photos of your own work with your own crew in them
  • Prices, or at least honest ranges
  • What you tell customers who ask for the thing you refuse to do

This is also the content that convinces a human. That is not a coincidence.

Measure Something That Matters

If organic sessions are your headline metric, you are going to have a bad couple of years. Move your reporting to:

  • Calls and form submissions, tracked to source
  • Direction requests and profile calls in Google Business Profile
  • Branded search volume, which goes up when awareness works
  • Booked jobs, which is the only number that pays anybody

We set this up for clients at the start of an engagement, because the conversation two quarters later is much easier when the baseline is a revenue number instead of a traffic number.

The Short Version

Answer engines took the browsing traffic. They did not take the buying traffic. Make sure a machine can read your site, make sure your profile and reviews are current, and put your writing effort into the specific, local, verifiable things nothing else can produce.

That was always the better strategy. The AI answers just removed the option of doing it the lazy way.
